The Open Science movement aims to open up the scientific process and increase access to scientific knowledge and research data.
Its main goals are:
- Access to knowledge: providing open and free access to scientific publications, research data and other research results, as well as educational resources.
- Research transparency: introducing the principle of openness in the research process, allowing the results to be reviewed and verified by other researchers.
- Open research data: encouraging the sharing of research data to enable other researchers to use it for their own analysis and research.
- Scientific Cooperation: promoting cooperation between scientists, institutions and countries by sharing resources, tools and knowledge.

CoARA
CoARA (Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment), a pan-European research assessment reform agreement.
Among the Polish institutions that have signed an agreement within the CoARA coalition is Wroclaw University of Economics. On behalf of our University Agreement on reforming research assessment signed by The Vice Chancellor for Business Affairs. Research and Academic Personnel, Professor Dr. Ewa Stańczyk-Hugiet at the European Commission’s flagship event European Research and Innovation Days 2022 on September 28, 2022.
The signatories commit to a shared vision whereby the evaluation of research, researchers and scientific institutions takes into account a variety of outcomes, publication practices and activities that maximize the quality and impact of research.
Achieving this vision requires that evaluation practices be based primarily on expert judgment supported by the responsible use of quantitative indicators.
Open science communication
Open Science Communication is a process aimed at sharing the results of research work, as well as acquiring new knowledge and participating in scientific discussions. The process involves a variety of communication techniques, as well as various forms of communicating information related to scientific activities.
Open scientific communication at the University of Economics and Business uses a variety of communication channels to provide broad access to knowledge. These include open e-journals, the institutional repository Knowledge Base, communication cycles and scientific reports published in social media and mass media.
Citizen Science
Citizen Science – Citizen Science, is a way of conducting scientific research, a research model that is based on collaboration between professional researchers and non-scientists who are involved in all stages of research projects.
In Citizen Science, volunteers – nonprofessionals – work with researchers in collecting data, analyzing, choosing a research method, processing data and drawing conclusions. It is a collaborative effort in which everyone, regardless of their education, material status or profession, has the opportunity to actively participate in scientific research.
Citizen Science has many benefits:
- allows for public involvement in science, leading to increased acceptance of science and its popularity
- Broadens access to scientific knowledge, enabling everyone to participate in research
- leads to valuable and innovative scientific discoveries
The institution that studies the mutual impact of Citizen Science and Open Science is the European Citizens Science Association. Citizen Science issues are also dealt with in the journal: Citizen Science: Theory and Practice.
Altimetric indicators
Altimetric indicators are a type of measure of research staff activity in the network, based on data extracted from various sources. Indicators are based on factors such as the number of downloads, publication shares, social media mentions, presence in scientific social networks, blog posts, recommendations comments.
Advantages of altmetric indicators:
- Automatic data collection and updating.
- Studying the impact of scientific achievements in different categories of users, not necessarily related to the scientific community.
- Monitor various manifestations of scientific activity, including blog posts, recommendations and comments.
- The ability for researchers to track real-time interest in their output.
- Availability of altmetrics data on various sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Google Scholar, LinkedIn, ResearchGate, Academia.eu, Slideshare, Wikipedia, Zotero, Mendeley.
Altmetric indicators have been implemented in the WIR Knowledge Base, displayed upon publication.
