How can research inform economic decisions, the energy transition and the development of new technologies? This week\u2019s review brings together WUEB experts\u2019 contributions to these debates, alongside the inclusion of six researchers in the World\u2019s Top 2% Scientists database. It also covers cooperation with business, forthcoming conferences and the launch of the university\u2019s anniversary celebrations.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wroclaw University of Economics and Business researchers among the world\u2019s leading scientists: six included in the 2026 World\u2019s Top 2% Scientists database<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

WUEB Experts: prof. dr hab. Katarzyna Piwowar-Sulej<\/a>; dr hab. in\u017c. Agnieszka Orkusz, Professor of the WUEB<\/strong><\/a>; dr in\u017c. Monika Were\u0144ska<\/a>; dr hab. in\u017c. Six WUEB researchers feature in the database, which assesses citation indicators for scientific publications. Five appear in the single-year list and two in the career-long list, with Arkadiusz Piwowar included in both. Katarzyna Piwowar-Sulej ranks first among authors with a Polish affiliation listed in the Business & Management subfield. Their inclusion reflects the international visibility of WUEB research in management, food, energy and quantitative methods. Citation indicators do not, however, provide a comprehensive assessment of research quality or societal impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WUEB Expert: prof. dr hab. Marek Ko\u015bny<\/a>, Vice-Rector for Research<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Rzeczpospolita\u2019s survey ahead of the economics prize announcement, Marek Ko\u015bny highlighted Susan Athey\u2019s work at the intersection of econometrics and market mechanism design. He pointed to the practical applications of her research and its links with machine learning and artificial intelligence. His contribution explains a strand of economics in which new methods of data analysis help address specific market problems. The report examines discussion of Europe\u2019s technological independence, funding for AI and collaboration between universities and business. Participants considered whether effective applications in the economy, public administration and education could become a European strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zbigniew Dokurno commented on debate over the European Union\u2019s future budget, focusing on the relationship between spending and economic competitiveness. He argued that strengthening competitiveness requires investment, while reallocating resources may involve reductions in sectors that are already relatively competitive, such as agriculture. His contribution frames the budget dispute in terms of development priorities and the allocation of limited resources between competing needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Business PRECOP, Bo\u017cena Ryszawska identified barriers to financing the transition: climate, energy and economic policies dispersed across ministries, and tensions between short-term market incentives and the state\u2019s long-term responsibilities. The expert from the Department of Corporate Finance and Public Finance highlighted the importance of public planning for infrastructure and strategic investment. She also stressed transparency in the use of taxpayers\u2019 money and the need for cooperation between government and business based on mutual respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The WUEB Rector chairs the jury of the Lower Silesian Gryphon Economic Award, which assesses applications and selects the companies and leaders to be recognised. The competition recognises achievements in areas including business development, innovative products and responsible business. Prof dr hab. Krzysztof Jajuga will take part in the opening panel of the UMCS conference in Lublin, scheduled for 15-16 October. The event will bring together researchers and market practitioners to discuss changing approaches to investment. Topics include property, cryptoassets, investor protection and investment risk. The WUEB expert\u2019s participation will bring a finance and risk-analysis perspective to the assessment of emerging investment opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agnieszka Bem will take part in the CPS Forum in Wroc\u0142aw on 20 November. As an economist, she will address the financial consequences of traumatic experiences in working life. The event will bring together mental-health researchers, business representatives and support organisations to discuss employee wellbeing and organisational responses to crises. Her economic perspective will place the costs of trauma within a wider discussion of management and support for employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The University of Economics celebrates its 80th anniversary with a commemorative mural<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The unveiling of a mural on Building Z opened the university\u2019s programme of 80th-anniversary celebrations. At the academic year\u2019s inauguration, Czes\u0142aw Zaj\u0105c described the work as a reflection of the university\u2019s traditions and future, bringing together vision and practice. Created by Kamil Tobiasz, the mural features in wroclaw.pl\u2019s account of WUEB\u2019s relationship with the city and region.
