At first glance, it\u2019s just a store. Small, open from early morning until late evening, instantly recognisable thanks to its green logo. But for millions of Poles, \u017babka is a fixture of everyday life \u2013 a place to grab breakfast, pay a bill, collect a parcel or simply pause for a moment between meetings.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"On<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

This Polish convenience store chain has now become the focus of one of the latest features by Germany\u2019s public radio broadcaster Deutschlandfunk Kultur<\/strong>, which set out to explore why \u017babka\u2019s highly efficient and widespread model thrives in Poland \u2013 but has yet to take hold in Germany<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Serving as the guide for German listeners: Dr Jaros\u0142aw Ignacy from the Wroc\u0142aw University of Economics and Business (UEW)<\/strong> \u2013 an expert in organizational development strategies and consumer trends. His commentary helps unpack something that feels intuitive for Polish consumers but appears surprising from the outside \u2013 because of its scale, speed and social impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201c\u017babka reflects the modern rhythm of life in Poland. We\u2019re seeing a growing number of young, mobile households \u2013 students, hybrid workers, people constantly on the move. Shopping today is part of that daily rhythm, not a planned event. \u017babka fits perfectly into this lifestyle \u2013 it\u2019s on the way, always open, always nearby.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

As Dr Ignacy explains, it\u2019s no coincidence that one in three Poles lives within 300 metres of a \u017babka store<\/strong>. This density isn\u2019t just the result of rapid expansion \u2013 it\u2019s the outcome of a carefully designed franchise model<\/strong>, allowing new locations to open quickly and with relatively low barriers to entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFrom a German perspective, what may be surprising is how easily the franchise model adapts to the Polish context. \u017babka franchisees don\u2019t need prior retail experience \u2013 they\u2019re provided with know-how, store locations, equipment, training and logistics systems. This ease of entry has been a major driver of growth.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u017babka stores aren\u2019t limited to big cities. As the German reporters observed, they\u2019re now opening in towns with just a few hundred residents. In some places, they\u2019ve become the only accessible service point<\/strong>, blending the role of grocery store, coffee bar, parcel pickup, kiosk and even a micro pharmacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this isn\u2019t a story without questions. The German programme also explores concerns: Is this level of market dominance coming at the expense of small, local businesses? What are the broader socioeconomic effects of such rapid growth?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a complex issue. On the one hand, we\u2019re seeing greater accessibility and convenience. On the other \u2013 questions about sustainability, franchisee profitability and the future of independent retail. Regardless of one\u2019s stance, \u017babka has become part of Poland\u2019s urban infrastructure \u2013 shaping new consumer habits and largely replacing other convenience models.\u201d<\/em><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

So why isn\u2019t the green frog jumping into Germany?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On one hand, as experts note, Germany already has equivalents<\/strong>: petrol stations with extended retail offers, \u201cRewe to go\u201d outlets, and a dense network of kiosks. On the other \u2013 consumer habits differ<\/strong>, shopping is often more planned and less spontaneous, and retail in public space is subject to stricter regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, what works efficiently in Poland cannot be simply transplanted to the German market<\/strong>. And yet \u2013 as the report suggests \u2013 that\u2019s exactly why \u017babka\u2019s case is so fascinating to Western European observers: it shows how local adaptation of a format can generate an entirely new model<\/strong> embedded in the fabric of everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The expertise of Dr Jaros\u0142aw Ignacy<\/strong>, featured in a report by one of Germany\u2019s leading public broadcasters, is yet another example of the international relevance of research conducted at UEW<\/strong>.
