On 2 December 2025, at the Presidential Palace, the President of the Republic of Poland, dr Karol Nawrocki, appointed the Family and Demography Council \u2013 a new advisory body tasked with addressing Poland\u2019s strategic demographic challenges and supporting Polish families. Among its 24 experts is Prof. dr Marek Ko\u015bny, Vice Rector for Research at the Wroclaw University of Economics and Business (UEW).<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Family and Demography Council was established in response to the deepening demographic crisis, described in a statement by the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland as one of the most serious social challenges, affecting every sphere of the state \u2013 from the labour market and the healthcare system to public finances. The Council brings together specialists in social policy, economics, demography and sociology, as well as representatives of family-oriented organisations and experts in maternal and child healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Council\u2019s mandate includes conducting a long-term strategic debate on the functioning of Polish families, analysing the effectiveness of public policy instruments and preparing opinions, policy frameworks and draft legislative initiatives for the President of the Republic of Poland in the field of family and demographic policy. In this way, it becomes one of the key fora in which academic knowledge is directly translated into system-level solutions in Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prof. Marek Ko\u015bny, as Vice-Rector for Research UEW and Head of the Department of Econometrics and Operations Research, specialises in applying statistical and econometric methods to the analysis of socio-economic phenomena, in particular income distribution, inequality, the economic security of households and poverty. His academic track record includes numerous publications and participation in research projects devoted, among other issues, to changes in income structure, income mobility and the long-term effects of social policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The appointment of Prof. Ko\u015bny to the Family and Demography Council strengthens the presence of the UEW in the nationwide debate on the future of demographic policy. It also creates a concrete space in which research conducted at our University \u2013 especially in the areas of the economics of the family, social inequality and economic security \u2013 can inform the design of solutions that address the consequences of population ageing and declining fertility over the coming decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The engagement of our Vice-Rector in the work of this advisory body means that the data, models and analyses developed at UEW will help to underpin recommendations submitted directly to the President of the Republic of Poland and will co-shape the direction of family policy in Poland in the years ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
