In reality, it is a long-distance run in which researchers, entrepreneurs, lawyers and investors move at different speeds and often along different tracks. In the Radio Wroc\u0142aw programme <em>\u201eR\u00f3\u017cne punkty s\u0142yszenia\u201d<\/em> (\u201cDifferent points of listening\u201d), one of the key voices was Dr Iwo Augusty\u0144ski from the Wroclaw University of Economics and Business, who very precisely described what universities are really for \u2013 and why this matters for the economy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--70);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--70)\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\" src=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2025\/11\/Aktualnosci-miniatura.png\" alt=\"The graphic is divided in half. Poland compared to selected EU countries\u201d<\/em>. The host quoted figures that are hard to sweep under the carpet. On a scale from 0 to 1, Polish universities scored:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>research collaboration \u2013 0.19<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>commercialisation of research \u2013 0.18<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>developing entrepreneurial attitudes in cooperation with business \u2013 0.18<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report\u2019s authors diagnose a basic mismatch between the world of universities and the world of business: the two sides know each other too little, understand each other poorly and, as a result, the role of Polish universities in innovation is often marginalised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Radio Wroc\u0142aw studio brought together all the key perspectives:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>startups and technology firms (Kacper Stasiak, Jan Szajda),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a lawyer specialising in intellectual property protection (Dominika Fikus Graf),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an expert in information management (Rafa\u0142 Czarnecki),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an economist working on innovation (Dr Adam Karpi\u0144ski),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and Dr Iwo Augusty\u0144ski \u2013 economist and researcher at the Wroclaw University of Economics and Business.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This line-up was not accidental. The conversation quickly moved beyond statistics. It focused on why good ideas so rarely end up as good products and services, and where exactly the system \u201cjams\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\"><strong>Science first, business later<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Iwo Augusty\u0144ski structured the discussion by distinguishing two levels of funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, funding for science itself: basic research, staff, infrastructure, equipment. As the UEW expert reminded listeners, in real terms spending on research is falling, and around 1% of GDP for R&amp;D is far too little for universities to keep up comfortably with the global frontier. It is difficult to expect breakthrough results if researchers have limited access to cutting-edge equipment and technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Second, funding for the transition to business. Here the picture looks very different. Dr Augusty\u0144ski listed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>university-based business incubators,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>venture capital funds \u2013 public, private and co-financed by the European Union,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>EU programmes in which innovation is a condition for receiving support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where the paradox he talked about becomes visible. Referring to conversations with representatives of investment funds, he noted that they have money \u2013 \u201ca lot of money\u201d \u2013 but \u201cno one to give it to\u201d: there are too few truly innovative ideas they could finance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem, then, is no longer just \u201ctoo little funding\u201d, but also the limited number of mature, well-prepared projects that can complete the journey from concept to implementation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Against this background, one sentence from Dr Augusty\u0144ski resonated particularly strongly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-default is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"border-top-style:none;border-top-width:0px;border-right-style:none;border-right-width:0px;border-bottom-style:none;border-bottom-width:0px;border-left-color:var(--wp--preset--color--ast-global-color-1);border-left-width:4px;padding-top:0;padding-bottom:0\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong>\u201cThe purpose of funding and of the university is not to do business, but to do science.\u201d<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A university \u2013 including an economics university \u2013 is first and foremost an institution that creates knowledge, not a factory producing ready-made products. This does not mean it should stay indifferent to the economy. It does mean, however, that commercialisation does not replace research. It should be an honest consequence of solid science: first research, then proof of concept with a partner, and only then a licence, special purpose vehicle or broader rollout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\"><strong>Where are the real bottlenecks in science\u2013business cooperation?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Set against the report\u2019s stark results, the other guests\u2019 contributions complemented the UEW expert\u2019s arguments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Technology entrepreneurs showed that without researchers it is difficult to build a lasting competitive advantage. Cooperation with universities enabled their companies to develop solutions based on deep learning \u2013 from analysing scientific articles, through student projects, to large consortia with universities and grants from the National Centre for Research and Development and the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The condition is simple: delivering results. A prototype, a test with a client, a concrete implementation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Startup representatives added that in practice it is not \u201cinstitutions\u201d that work together, but specific people on both sides. A particular research group, a particular business team, particular names. For this cooperation to make sense, everyone needs to speak a shared language: clearly define goals, timelines and milestones, while also talking honestly about risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lawyers and intellectual property experts reminded listeners of the importance of \u201clegal hygiene\u201d. The requirement of novelty for patents, well-structured non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) and conscious management of trade secrets are the absolute minimum. Mistakes are often surprisingly simple: publishing results first and only then thinking about protection \u2013 when novelty has already been lost. On top of that come rigid template contracts imposed \u201cfrom the centre\u201d, which do not fit the reality of specific projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Economists working on innovation, such as Dr Adam Karpi\u0144ski, highlighted yet another key point: risk. By definition, invention and innovation do not always end in success \u2013 we \u201cget lost\u201d more often than we win. Funding systems \u2013 especially public ones \u2013 have to take this into account and give young teams room to iterate, without paralysing them with short-term indicators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\"><strong>What next? The role of university experts in building bridges<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The programme painted a coherent picture: science and business need each other, but for research results to reach the market more often, several simple but demanding steps are needed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>one clear contact path on each side (named people rather than anonymous \u201cinstitutions\u201d),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a shared language of outcomes: alongside publications, a clear description of the problem, users and measurable benefits,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>rapid prototyping and client testing instead of months of correspondence,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>good \u201clegal hygiene\u201d from the first meeting (NDA, mapping IP, a simple research contract),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>acceptance that some projects \u2013 from a business perspective \u2013 will remain \u201cpure science\u201d, but that they still build the knowledge base.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In such a model, experts at universities have a special role. They combine scientific expertise with an understanding of market mechanisms.
