During the holiday season we generate significant amounts of waste, waste food and use more resources than usual<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/christmas-trees-to-rent-food-to-share-how-to-celebrate-while-caring-for-the-planet\/#:~:text=%C5%9Awi%C4%99ta%20Bo%C5%BCego%20Narodzenia%20to%20czas,tylko%20magiczne%2C%20ale%20te%C5%BC%20ekologiczne\"><\/a>. The cost of managing Christmas waste can be substantial. Businesses pay product fees that differ by packaging type \u2013 for example 0.70&nbsp;PLN per kilogram of cardboard and 2.70&nbsp;PLN per kilogram of plastic; the average cost of disposing of plastic waste is about 1\u202f650&nbsp;PLN per tonne<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/christmas-trees-to-rent-food-to-share-how-to-celebrate-while-caring-for-the-planet\/#:~:text=Koszty%20zwi%C4%85zane%20z%20zarz%C4%85dzaniem%20odpadami,do%20tego\"><\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignwide is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--70);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--70)\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jak \u015bwi\u0119towa\u0107 z trosk\u0105 o planet\u0119? - prof. dr hab. in\u017c. After the holidays, rented trees are returned to the supplier, who replants or cares for them for the next season; this avoids the need to discard trees and thus helps protect the environment<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/christmas-trees-to-rent-food-to-share-how-to-celebrate-while-caring-for-the-planet\/#:~:text=Ostatnio%20coraz%20popularniejsze%20s%C4%85%20wypo%C5%BCyczalnie,przyczynia%20si%C4%99%20do%20ochrony%20%C5%9Brodowiska\"><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Food waste at Christmas is another serious problem. In Poland people throw away two to three times more food during the festive period than at other times of the year; 63&nbsp;per&nbsp;cent of Poles admit buying more food than needed for the three\u2011day holiday<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/christmas-trees-to-rent-food-to-share-how-to-celebrate-while-caring-for-the-planet\/#:~:text=Marnowanie%20%C5%BCywno%C5%9Bci%20w%20okresie%20%C5%9Bwi%C4%85tecznym,ilo%C5%9Bci%20jedzenia%2C%20co%20pozwoli%20go%C5%9Bciom\"><\/a>. The tradition of abundant meals leads to preparing too much. To counter this, the article advises serving smaller portions so guests can take more if they are still hungry, which reduces leftovers<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/christmas-trees-to-rent-food-to-share-how-to-celebrate-while-caring-for-the-planet\/#:~:text=na%20dok%C5%82adki%2C%20je%C5%9Bli%20b%C4%99d%C4%85%20g%C5%82odni,To%20zmniejsza%20ryzyko%20pozostawienia%20resztek\"><\/a>. Leftovers can be frozen or transformed into other dishes; after dinner surplus food can be shared with guests or donated to local food\u2011sharing initiatives<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/christmas-trees-to-rent-food-to-share-how-to-celebrate-while-caring-for-the-planet\/#:~:text=Pozosta%C5%82o%C5%9Bci%20po%20%C5%9Bwi%C4%99tach%20mo%C5%BCna%20zamra%C5%BCa%C4%87,odda%C4%87%20je%20do%20lokalnych%20jad%C5%82odzielni\"><\/a>. Raising awareness of food waste and its environmental impact can help change purchasing and culinary habits<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/christmas-trees-to-rent-food-to-share-how-to-celebrate-while-caring-for-the-planet\/#:~:text=Zwi%C4%99kszenie%20%C5%9Bwiadomo%C5%9Bci%20na%20temat%20marnowania,zmianie%20nawyk%C3%B3w%20zakupowych%20i%20kulinarnych\"><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christmas need not mean excessive consumption and waste generation. Simple changes \u2013 reducing food waste, using ecological Christmas trees and choosing reusable packaging \u2013 allow us to celebrate sustainably. The article encourages readers to make the holidays more sustainable, both for ourselves and for future generations<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/christmas-trees-to-rent-food-to-share-how-to-celebrate-while-caring-for-the-planet\/#:~:text=%C5%9Awi%C4%99ta%20Bo%C5%BCego%20Narodzenia%20nie%20musz%C4%85,dla%20nas%20i%20przysz%C5%82ych%20pokole%C5%84\"><\/a>. <strong>Prof.&nbsp;Dr&nbsp;hab.&nbsp;In\u017c.&nbsp;Ma\u0142gorzata&nbsp;Krzywonos<\/strong>, expert at the Wroclaw University of Economics and Business, concludes the commentary by reminding us that sustainable holidays are possible and refers readers to further literature on sustainable food and waste reduction<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/christmas-trees-to-rent-food-to-share-how-to-celebrate-while-caring-for-the-planet\/#:~:text=prof,ekspertka%20Uniwersytetu%20Ekonomicznego%20we%20Wroc%C5%82awiu\"><\/a>.
