For decades this principle drove innovation, globalisation and higher living standards. Growth, however, requires fuel: natural resources such as land, water, energy, forests and soil<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/is-this-the-end-of-capitalism-as-we-know-it-economics-climate-and-questions-we-can-no-longer-ignore\/#:~:text=System%2C%20kt%C3%B3ry%20mia%C5%82%20s%C5%82u%C5%BCy%C4%87%20ludziom,%E2%80%93%20ale%20czy%20nadal%20s%C5%82u%C5%BCy\"><\/a>. We now know that exploiting these resources comes at a price. Production and consumption contribute to global threats ranging from ocean pollution to droughts, climate\u2011driven migration and extreme weather; the list of costs is growing faster than gross domestic product<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/is-this-the-end-of-capitalism-as-we-know-it-economics-climate-and-questions-we-can-no-longer-ignore\/#:~:text=Dzi%C5%9B%20wiemy%2C%20%C5%BCe%20ich%20eksploatacja,koszt%C3%B3w%20ro%C5%9Bnie%20szybciej%20ni%C5%BC%20PKB\"><\/a>. Ryszawska points out that side effects of economic growth include waste, emissions and biodiversity loss and asks whether an economic model designed to deliver prosperity truly serves us<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/is-this-the-end-of-capitalism-as-we-know-it-economics-climate-and-questions-we-can-no-longer-ignore\/#:~:text=%E2%80%93%20Efektem%20ubocznym%20wzrostu%20gospodarczego,zapewni%C4%87%20dobrobyt%2C%20rzeczywi%C5%9Bcie%20nam%20s%C5%82u%C5%BCy\"><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Alternatives the world is discussing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the scientific community new answers are emerging. They are neither easy nor comfortable, yet they are increasingly hard to ignore<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/is-this-the-end-of-capitalism-as-we-know-it-economics-climate-and-questions-we-can-no-longer-ignore\/#:~:text=Alternatywy%2C%20o%20kt%C3%B3rych%20m%C3%B3wi%20dzi%C5%9B,%C5%9Bwiat\"><\/a>. Instead of an economy based solely on growth, researchers propose ecological economics, doughnut economics, the sharing economy, the circular economy and the post\u2011growth economy. These concepts share the conviction that development cannot continue in isolation from the planet\u2019s ecological limits<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/is-this-the-end-of-capitalism-as-we-know-it-economics-climate-and-questions-we-can-no-longer-ignore\/#:~:text=Na%20miejsce%20gospodarki%20opartej%20wy%C5%82%C4%85cznie,oderwaniu%20od%20granic%20naszej%20planety\"><\/a>. Ecological economics emphasises that Earth\u2019s resources are common goods that cannot be exploited indefinitely, while doughnut economics argues that we must stay within ecological boundaries while ensuring everyone a basic quality of life<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/is-this-the-end-of-capitalism-as-we-know-it-economics-climate-and-questions-we-can-no-longer-ignore\/#:~:text=%E2%80%93%20Ekonomia%20ekologiczna%20pokazuje%2C%20%C5%BCe,by%C4%87%20mo%C5%BCe%20%E2%80%93%20konieczna%20alternatywa\"><\/a>. Ryszawska suggests that these ideas offer more ethical and sustainable alternatives \u2013 and perhaps necessary ones<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/is-this-the-end-of-capitalism-as-we-know-it-economics-climate-and-questions-we-can-no-longer-ignore\/#:~:text=%E2%80%93%20Ekonomia%20ekologiczna%20pokazuje%2C%20%C5%BCe,by%C4%87%20mo%C5%BCe%20%E2%80%93%20konieczna%20alternatywa\"><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Societies want change faster than politicians<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although changing the economic model may seem revolutionary, social expectations are rising. Poles increasingly invest in photovoltaic panels, purchase energy\u2011efficient appliances and demand systemic solutions. A CBOS survey shows that 80&nbsp;per&nbsp;cent of citizens would like to use energy from renewable sources<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/is-this-the-end-of-capitalism-as-we-know-it-economics-climate-and-questions-we-can-no-longer-ignore\/#:~:text=Cho%C4%87%20zmiana%20modelu%20gospodarczego%20wydaje,z%20energii%20ze%20%C5%BAr%C3%B3de%C5%82%20odnawialnych\"><\/a>. Ecological awareness and economic calculations both support the green transition: renewable energy sources are now cheaper and more stable<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/is-this-the-end-of-capitalism-as-we-know-it-economics-climate-and-questions-we-can-no-longer-ignore\/#:~:text=Nie%20tylko%20%C5%9Bwiadomo%C5%9B%C4%87%20ekologiczna%2C%20ale,ta%C5%84sze%20i%20bardziej%20stabilne%20rozwi%C4%85zania\"><\/a>. Ryszawska observes that more and more people understand that the so\u2011called \u201cgreen economy\u201d is not an elite fad but a foundation of energy and social security in coming decades<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/is-this-the-end-of-capitalism-as-we-know-it-economics-climate-and-questions-we-can-no-longer-ignore\/#:~:text=%E2%80%93%20Spo%C5%82ecze%C5%84stwa%20coraz%20cz%C4%99%C5%9Bciej%20rozumiej%C4%85%2C,i%20spo%C5%82ecznego%20w%20nadchodz%C4%85cych%20dekadach\"><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">What next?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps now, amid climate, energy and social crises, is the time not merely to correct course but to question the path we have taken<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/is-this-the-end-of-capitalism-as-we-know-it-economics-climate-and-questions-we-can-no-longer-ignore\/#:~:text=Co%20dalej%3F\"><\/a>. The goal is not to overturn the entire system but to have the courage to think differently and start building an economic model that not only supports development but also protects what is most precious: the planet and future generations<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/is-this-the-end-of-capitalism-as-we-know-it-economics-climate-and-questions-we-can-no-longer-ignore\/#:~:text=Nie%20chodzi%20o%20to%2C%20by,najcenniejsze%3A%20planet%C4%99%20i%20przysz%C5%82e%20pokolenia\"><\/a>.
