Yet where are our global technology brands? Where is our Spotify, Tesla or Netflix? Why do our companies sell themselves to foreign investors before achieving global success? It stops competing with cheap labour yet cannot leap to the league of global innovation leaders. Firms stay in a comfort zone because what has worked for the past decade seems sufficient. Poland exports excellent IT specialists but fails to build global technology companies; our start\u2011ups grow abroad because conditions for scaling are better there<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/why-doesnt-poland-have-its-own-spotify-the-middle%e2%80%91income-trap-and-a-strategy-for-the-future\/#:~:text=Czym%20jest%20pu%C5%82apka%20%C5%9Bredniego%20rozwoju%3F\"><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">The Responsible Development Strategy \u2013 is it enough?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In&nbsp;2017 the Polish government announced a <strong>Responsible Development Strategy<\/strong> (SOR) that promised innovation, reindustrialisation and greater competitiveness. The goal was ambitious: to move from a cheap\u2011labour model to a knowledge\u2011based economy<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/why-doesnt-poland-have-its-own-spotify-the-middle%e2%80%91income-trap-and-a-strategy-for-the-future\/#:~:text=Polski%20rz%C4%85d%20ju%C5%BC%20w%202017,do%20gospodarki%20opartej%20na%20wiedzy\"><\/a>. Declarations are one thing, reality another. Poland\u2019s research\u2011and\u2011development spending amounts to 1.44&nbsp;per&nbsp;cent of GDP, whereas the EU average is 2.27&nbsp;per&nbsp;cent<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/why-doesnt-poland-have-its-own-spotify-the-middle%e2%80%91income-trap-and-a-strategy-for-the-future\/#:~:text=,gdy%20unijna%20%C5%9Brednia%20to%202%2C27\"><\/a>. The economic structure still relies on outsourcing and production for foreign companies rather than building our own global brands<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/why-doesnt-poland-have-its-own-spotify-the-middle%e2%80%91income-trap-and-a-strategy-for-the-future\/#:~:text=,na%20budowie%20w%C5%82asnych%2C%20globalnych%20marek\"><\/a>. Innovation is often treated as a risk rather than a necessity<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/why-doesnt-poland-have-its-own-spotify-the-middle%e2%80%91income-trap-and-a-strategy-for-the-future\/#:~:text=,jako%20ryzyko%2C%20a%20nie%20konieczno%C5%9B%C4%87\"><\/a>. The result is that Poland still lacks its own Spotify<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/why-doesnt-poland-have-its-own-spotify-the-middle%e2%80%91income-trap-and-a-strategy-for-the-future\/#:~:text=Efekt%3F%20Polska%20wci%C4%85%C5%BC%20nie%20ma,swojego%20Spotify\"><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">What blocks innovation in Poland?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr&nbsp;Wanicki points to several barriers: entrepreneurs rarely have access to capital for long\u2011term investment in technology; many firms lack a strategy and wait for external changes instead of investing in development; and business failure is often stigmatised rather than seen as part of the learning process<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/why-doesnt-poland-have-its-own-spotify-the-middle%e2%80%91income-trap-and-a-strategy-for-the-future\/#:~:text=,w%20Dolinie%20Krzemowej\"><\/a>. This culture of risk aversion keeps firms from pursuing ambitious innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">How to change it? A model for innovation in SMEs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of dwelling on problems, Dr&nbsp;Wanicki proposes research\u2011based solutions. He is studying 150 Polish companies to identify tools that might help them break out of stagnation<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/why-doesnt-poland-have-its-own-spotify-the-middle%e2%80%91income-trap-and-a-strategy-for-the-future\/#:~:text=,pom%C3%B3c%20im%20w%20prze%C5%82amaniu%20stagnacji\"><\/a>. He is developing a <strong>practical innovation strategy model<\/strong> for small and medium\u2011sized enterprises so that the model becomes a decision\u2011making tool rather than merely an academic theory<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/why-doesnt-poland-have-its-own-spotify-the-middle%e2%80%91income-trap-and-a-strategy-for-the-future\/#:~:text=,przedsi%C4%99biorcami%20%E2%80%93%20%C5%BCeby%20wiedzie%C4%87%2C%20co\"><\/a>. Consultations with investors, advisors and entrepreneurs ensure that the model reflects what actually works rather than empty slogans<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/why-doesnt-poland-have-its-own-spotify-the-middle%e2%80%91income-trap-and-a-strategy-for-the-future\/#:~:text=,co%20jest%20tylko%20pustym%20has%C5%82em\"><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Can Poland produce its own unicorn?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes \u2013 but only if we stop treating innovation as a luxury and start treating it as a survival strategy. Investment in technological development is not a cost but a competitive advantage; companies need to abandon short\u2011term thinking and plan strategically.
