ESG refers to the environmental, social and governance responsibilities of firms; companies are expected to protect the environment, respect people and ensure transparency in corporate governance. A few years ago ESG was niche, but today it has become one of the most important trends in global business, as investors and consumers increasingly recognise that caring for the planet and society is not a fad but a source of competitive advantage.&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignwide is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rz\u0105dy Trumpa, deregulacja ESG i klimat. Co dalej z zielon\u0105 transformacj\u0105?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cAOgpi8icdM?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Donald Trump versus the climate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2017 President <strong>Donald&nbsp;Trump<\/strong> announced that the United States would withdraw from the Paris Agreement. \u201cI was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris,\u201d he said, stressing that the interests of the American economy were more important than global climate commitments<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/rzady-donalda-trumpa-pakiet-omnibus-i-katastrofa-klimatyczna-jak-polityka-ksztaltuje-przyszlosc-esg\/#:~:text=Donald%20Trump%20kontra%20klimat\"><\/a>. His administration subsequently repealed or weakened more than one hundred environmental regulations, from emission standards for coal\u2011fired power plants to car standards<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/rzady-donalda-trumpa-pakiet-omnibus-i-katastrofa-klimatyczna-jak-polityka-ksztaltuje-przyszlosc-esg\/#:~:text=globalne%20zobowi%C4%85zania%20klimatyczne,W%20kampanii%20wyborczej%20w\"><\/a>. During his 2023 campaign Trump reiterated: <em>\u201cWe will not let woke ESG policies dictate how we invest taxpayer money\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/rzady-donalda-trumpa-pakiet-omnibus-i-katastrofa-klimatyczna-jak-polityka-ksztaltuje-przyszlosc-esg\/#:~:text=2023%20roku%20Trump%20powtarza%C5%82%3A%20%E2%80%9EWe,how%20we%20invest%20taxpayer%20money%E2%80%9D\"><\/a>. Yet this political hostility towards ESG does not mean that corporate America has abandoned climate action. Companies such as Microsoft, Apple and Google have actually intensified their pro\u2011environmental activities; they invest billions of dollars in renewable energy, reduce emissions and set ambitious climate goals because they know that customers, investors and partners increasingly choose responsible companies<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/rzady-donalda-trumpa-pakiet-omnibus-i-katastrofa-klimatyczna-jak-polityka-ksztaltuje-przyszlosc-esg\/#:~:text=Czy%20to%20oznacza%2C%20%C5%BCe%20biznes,coraz%20cz%C4%99%C5%9Bciej%20wybieraj%C4%85%20firmy%20odpowiedzialne\"><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">The EU\u2019s Omnibus package \u2013 deregulation, opportunity and controversy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In February&nbsp;2025 the European Commission unveiled <strong>Omnibus&nbsp;I<\/strong>, a set of simplifications to ESG reporting. Detailed sustainability reporting will be required only of the largest firms \u2013 those with more than 1\u202f000 employees, a balance\u2011sheet total above \u20ac25&nbsp;million or revenues exceeding \u20ac50&nbsp;million<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/rzady-donalda-trumpa-pakiet-omnibus-i-katastrofa-klimatyczna-jak-polityka-ksztaltuje-przyszlosc-esg\/#:~:text=W%20lutym%202025%20roku%20Komisja,Dla%20nich%20ESG%20stanie%20si%C4%99\"><\/a>. About 80&nbsp;per&nbsp;cent of EU companies, mainly small and medium\u2011sized enterprises (SMEs), will therefore be exempt; for them ESG reporting becomes voluntary<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/rzady-donalda-trumpa-pakiet-omnibus-i-katastrofa-klimatyczna-jak-polityka-ksztaltuje-przyszlosc-esg\/#:~:text=milion%C3%B3w%20euro,nich%20ESG%20stanie%20si%C4%99%20dobrowolne\"><\/a>. Firms that remain subject to reporting gain two additional years to prepare for the new requirements, and the Commission promises simpler standards and voluntary, lighter rules for smaller businesses<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/rzady-donalda-trumpa-pakiet-omnibus-i-katastrofa-klimatyczna-jak-polityka-ksztaltuje-przyszlosc-esg\/#:~:text=Dodatkowo%2C%20firmy%2C%20kt%C3%B3re%20nadal%20b%C4%99d%C4%85,prostszych%20zasad%20dla%20mniejszych%20przedsi%C4%99biorstw\"><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Proponents argue that these changes could reduce bureaucracy by 25&nbsp;per&nbsp;cent for large companies and by up to 35&nbsp;per&nbsp;cent for SMEs, allowing businesses to focus on action rather than paperwork<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/rzady-donalda-trumpa-pakiet-omnibus-i-katastrofa-klimatyczna-jak-polityka-ksztaltuje-przyszlosc-esg\/#:~:text=Czy%20to%20krok%20wstecz%3F%20Tu,Jednak\"><\/a>. Critics warn that simplifying the rules may dilute ESG standards and reduce the availability of data on corporate environmental impact<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/rzady-donalda-trumpa-pakiet-omnibus-i-katastrofa-klimatyczna-jak-polityka-ksztaltuje-przyszlosc-esg\/#:~:text=si%C4%99%20na%20realnych%20dzia%C5%82aniach%2C%20a,o%20wp%C5%82ywie%20firm%20na%20%C5%9Brodowisko\"><\/a>. Controversy also surrounds proposed changes to the carbon border adjustment mechanism and the idea of replacing individual supplier assessments with regional certificates; NGOs see a risk of diffusing supply\u2011chain responsibility, while business welcomes the potential reduction in bureaucracy and costs<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/rzady-donalda-trumpa-pakiet-omnibus-i-katastrofa-klimatyczna-jak-polityka-ksztaltuje-przyszlosc-esg\/#:~:text=Szczeg%C3%B3lnie%20gor%C4%85ce%20spory%20dotycz%C4%85%20zmian,uproszczenie%20procedur%20i%20zmniejszenie%20koszt%C3%B3w\"><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">The climate emergency will not wait<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of political decisions, climate change is accelerating. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reported in 2023 that average global temperature has already risen by 1.1&nbsp;\u00b0C above pre\u2011industrial levels<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/rzady-donalda-trumpa-pakiet-omnibus-i-katastrofa-klimatyczna-jak-polityka-ksztaltuje-przyszlosc-esg\/#:~:text=Niezale%C5%BCnie%20od%20politycznych%20decyzji%2C%20zmiany,mierzymy%20si%C4%99%20tu%20i%20teraz\"><\/a>. Extreme weather events \u2013 droughts, floods, wildfires \u2013 are no longer distant threats but part of our reality<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/rzady-donalda-trumpa-pakiet-omnibus-i-katastrofa-klimatyczna-jak-polityka-ksztaltuje-przyszlosc-esg\/#:~:text=por%C3%B3wnaniu%20z%20epok%C4%85%20przedindustrialn%C4%85,mierzymy%20si%C4%99%20tu%20i%20teraz\"><\/a>. Business therefore plays a critical role: companies have a significant environmental impact yet also immense potential to mitigate it. Investment in renewable energy, circular\u2011economy models and technological innovation helps protect the planet while generating economic benefits<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/rzady-donalda-trumpa-pakiet-omnibus-i-katastrofa-klimatyczna-jak-polityka-ksztaltuje-przyszlosc-esg\/#:~:text=W%20tej%20sytuacji%20rola%20biznesu,te%C5%BC%20przynosi%20wymierne%20korzy%C5%9Bci%20ekonomiczne\"><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Polish companies on the green path<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Polish firms are increasingly taking concrete climate actions not just because of regulation but out of conviction that sustainability pays off. The <strong>LPP&nbsp;Group<\/strong>, owner of fashion brands such as Reserved and Cropp, has consistently implemented a sustainable\u2011development strategy; it invests in renewable energy at its logistics centres, reduces plastic in packaging and develops collections made from environmentally friendly materials<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/rzady-donalda-trumpa-pakiet-omnibus-i-katastrofa-klimatyczna-jak-polityka-ksztaltuje-przyszlosc-esg\/#:~:text=Na%20przyk%C5%82ad%20Grupa%20LPP%2C%20w%C5%82a%C5%9Bciciel,w%20stosunku%20do\"><\/a>. In&nbsp;2023 LPP reduced its CO\u2082 emissions by more than 20&nbsp;per&nbsp;cent compared with the previous year<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/rzady-donalda-trumpa-pakiet-omnibus-i-katastrofa-klimatyczna-jak-polityka-ksztaltuje-przyszlosc-esg\/#:~:text=%C5%9Brodowisku,w%20stosunku%20do%20roku%20poprzedniego\"><\/a>. The convenience\u2011store chain <strong>\u017babka<\/strong> promotes electromobility and energy efficiency by using energy\u2011efficient refrigerators, drawing on green energy and developing an electric delivery fleet; in&nbsp;2024 it opened Poland\u2019s first climate\u2011neutral store equipped with photovoltaic panels and heat\u2011recovery systems<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/rzady-donalda-trumpa-pakiet-omnibus-i-katastrofa-klimatyczna-jak-polityka-ksztaltuje-przyszlosc-esg\/#:~:text=Inny%20przyk%C5%82ad%20to%20%C5%BBabka%2C%20kt%C3%B3ra,fotowoltaiczne%20i%20systemy%20odzysku%20ciep%C5%82a\"><\/a>. <strong>KGHM<\/strong>, one of the world\u2019s largest copper producers, invests in photovoltaic farms and metal\u2011recycling projects and has declared that by&nbsp;2030 it wants to achieve climate neutrality in its own energy production<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/rzady-donalda-trumpa-pakiet-omnibus-i-katastrofa-klimatyczna-jak-polityka-ksztaltuje-przyszlosc-esg\/#:~:text=R%C3%B3wnie%C5%BC%20Grupa%20KGHM%2C%20jeden%20z,w%20zakresie%20w%C5%82asnej%20produkcji%20energii\"><\/a>. These examples show that Polish business not only sees opportunities in the green transition but actively harnesses them, regardless of regulatory changes<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/rzady-donalda-trumpa-pakiet-omnibus-i-katastrofa-klimatyczna-jak-polityka-ksztaltuje-przyszlosc-esg\/#:~:text=Takie%20przyk%C5%82ady%20pokazuj%C4%85%2C%20%C5%BCe%20polski,niezale%C5%BCnie%20od%20zmian%20w%20przepisach\"><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Business sees opportunity in the green transition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite deregulation and simplification, more and more companies recognise that climate action is not merely an obligation but an opportunity. As Satya Nadella, the chief executive of Microsoft, puts it: <em>\u201cWe believe that sustainability is not only good for the planet, but also for business\u201d<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/rzady-donalda-trumpa-pakiet-omnibus-i-katastrofa-klimatyczna-jak-polityka-ksztaltuje-przyszlosc-esg\/#:~:text=Pomimo%20deregulacji%20i%20uproszcze%C5%84%2C%20coraz,klient%C3%B3w%2C%20inwestor%C3%B3w%20i%20najlepszych%20pracownik%C3%B3w\"><\/a>. Environmental responsibility becomes an asset in competition for customers, investors and the best employees. In practice this means that, even if the law no longer requires detailed ESG reporting, many firms will continue to do it because business partners, consumers and financial markets expect it<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/rzady-donalda-trumpa-pakiet-omnibus-i-katastrofa-klimatyczna-jak-polityka-ksztaltuje-przyszlosc-esg\/#:~:text=W%20praktyce%20oznacza%20to%2C%20%C5%BCe,to%20wszystko%20buduje%20przewag%C4%99%20konkurencyjn%C4%85\"><\/a>. Green certificates, transparency and investment in innovation build competitive advantage<a href=\"https:\/\/badania.uew.pl\/en\/rzady-donalda-trumpa-pakiet-omnibus-i-katastrofa-klimatyczna-jak-polityka-ksztaltuje-przyszlosc-esg\/#:~:text=W%20praktyce%20oznacza%20to%2C%20%C5%BCe,to%20wszystko%20buduje%20przewag%C4%99%20konkurencyjn%C4%85\"><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Conclusion \u2013 politics is not everything<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Politics can slow or accelerate the green transition but cannot stop it. Business increasingly understands that the future belongs to those who combine development with care for the environment and society. The EU\u2019s Omnibus package is an opportunity to simplify regulations and focus on real action, but it also brings controversy and challenges.
